Small Animal Neurology/Neurosurgery

The Neurology/Neurosurgery service at Texas A&M University – College of Veterinary Medicine provides cutting edge clinical care to dogs and cats with neurological disease.  The service is supported by three tenure track faculty members. Drs. Dan Hicks and Jon Levine, are board certified neurologists, and Dr. Sharon Kerwin, is a board certified surgeon.  In addition, we work with a team including radiologists, internists, anesthesiologists, pathologists, other specialists, and basic scientists to give your pet the best care possible.

Why bring your pet to Texas A&M Neurology/Neurosurgery?  How are we different than other care providers?

  1. We have the largest team of veterinary specialists in the Southwestern United States, with 32 board certified individuals in Small Animal Clinical Sciences alone. Many faculty members are recognized leaders in their respective fields of expertise.  In fact, the US News and World Report ranks Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine #5 in the nation in recognition of our outstanding clinical, basic science, and teaching programs.
  2. The neurology and neurosurgery service is dedicated to innovating clinical treatments for animals with disease and the understanding of these disorders.  Our group has been involved in: recognizing new treatments for spinal cord injury, developing surgical approaches for cervical spondylomyelopathy (wobblers), and research on encephalitis.  We currently have several clinical trials for which your pet may be eligible to participate.
  3. The neurology/neurosurgery service has access to some of the best medical equipment and medical services.  We have a 1.0 T MRI which is used for brain and spinal imaging, a CT scanner, fluoroscopy, electrophysiology equipment (electroencephalography, BAER, EMG, nerve conduction), and surgical microscopy.  In addition, your pet will have access to our rehabilitation and pain management staff who will participate in their recovery.

Scheduled appointments for small animals with non-emergent concerns can be made by having your veterinarian contact the Small Animal Clinic receptionists at 979-845-2351. We will make every attempt to see your family member in a timely manner.
